Orcas and Whales are all around already and the team onboard SV “Southern Star” were delighted this week but they are still on the outside and far away to be easily reachable during a short kayak trip. They are entering Kaldfjord but moving non stop around at cruise speed making it difficult may be for good observations from kayaks.
Anyway, we’re planning a trial session on Saturday, November 12th to see what’s going on down there. Launching zone in Kaldfjord will be decided later accordind with last observations, may be only Saturday morning early.

Sunday, Nov 13th 2016. Debriefing from trip of Saturday, Nov 12th :
Mission accomplished 🙂 We saw three time a group of 4/5 orcas, twice from far away (200 meters), the third time, we were in the middle of the group with one observation from around 30 meters. Wind force was strong (20/25 nds) making it difficult against the wind. For this trial session we had equiped our kayaks with stabilizing Ama floaters and were very pleased with the option when crossing the fjord with 3 feet of nasty chop from beam. It was a nice day, unfortunately all our pictures weren’t good (bad focus, wet lens, too far away) .
