ecolodge sommarøy un choix éco-responsable

Båthuset an eco-friendly guest house and a charming cottage with sober and natural luxury.

Our eco-lodge, in the heart of an exceptional site, is available for rent in a private version or in single rooms. It’s a warm place. Many people have told us that they felt at home there. Its capacity for up to fifteen people makes it the ideal place for groups who want to keep their autonomy but also for individuals or small groups who wish to discover the Sommarøy archipelago and its surroundings by sharing an authentic stopover at the end of the world.

Whether for solo moments, as a couple, with family or friends, as an artist residency or for a seminar or business trip, the Båthuset ecolodge will meet the expectations of those for whom silence, space and time are the true ingredients of luxury.

A few words from the founder

An eco-friendly approach

“The sea has taught me that sufficiency and natural spaces can rhyme with fulfillment without compromising comfort or safety.

My sailboats have always been simply equipped. This is one of the essential points for the success of a polar expedition. However, repairability, reliability of equipment, optimization and saving of resources, and the fight against waste do not hinder the joy of living, enthusiasm and well-being. Hundreds of crew members on board were able to see this with ease.

This model naturally inspired us when creating the Båthuset (the boat house) ecolodge.

Let us keep in mind that our beautiful planet Earth is our only ship.” 🙂

The 7 bedrooms

The original volumes (the rooms look like boat cabins) have been respected to keep an energy sufficiency more necessary than ever in cold regions and in times of climate change. The insulation, which is particularly careful, also contributes to the sufficiency of the building, as do the fifty-eight other points on which we have focused in order to be able to live comfortably while limiting its footprint on nature as much as possible.

A peaceful place designed for rejuvenation.

The lodge is located on the water’s edge, with direct access to the beach. It is south-facing and benefits from the slightest ray of sunshine, which is not a detail in our regions. The view offers, in the background, a vast panorama of the north coast of Senja Island, about ten kilometers away. The small deserted islands of the archipelago complete the foreground with turquoise waters.

The decoration of the lodge refers to Olivier’s polar expeditions, who has carefully chosen a few shots from his personal collection. The choice of natural materials for the layout and furniture has been made to last over time and offer charm and comfort. We are counting on your participation to maintain this atmosphere and this philosophy.

Båthuset is spread over three carefully landscaped levels:

First level: 2 double bedrooms, a fitted kitchen with dining area, and a bathroom with shower, sink and WC.

Second level: a bright common area including a fitted kitchen, a dining room, a lounge area with wood stove, and a bathroom with shower, sink and toilet. The south-facing room opens onto a terrace leading to the beach.

Third level: 4 double bedrooms, 1 triple bedroom, as well as a shower and separate toilet.

The 7 bedrooms share 2 equipped kitchens, 1 living room, 2 dining areas, 3 showers and 3 toilets.

All beds are equipped with high-end mattresses.

The surroundings

A fairytale island at the edge of the world

In the heart of a
magical archipelago

The island of Sommarøy, the jewel of northern Norway, offers an enchanting setting between fjords and ocean. Located just 50 km from Tromsø, nicknamed the "Little Paris of the North", it is ideal for contemplating the Northern Lights or the midnight sun. It is a place where the sky dances and the horizon seems infinite, with the only neighbours to the west being the shores of Greenland.

Båthuset, an eco-lodge
on the beach

Built in 1952 by Harry Lauveng, a fisherman from Sommarøy, Båthuset was completely renovated in 2022 in compliance with the environmental standards of the "Green Key" label. This historic building, transformed into an eco-lodge, now offers a perfect balance between old-fashioned charm and contemporary comfort, while being part of a sustainable approach.

A natural setting
exceptional

Ideally located on the water's edge, with direct access to the beach, Båthuset is south-facing to take full advantage of the sunlight, precious in these northern regions. Its breathtaking view embraces the north coast of the island of Senja and an archipelago of deserted islands with turquoise waters, creating an enchanting setting for a rejuvenating stay.

An Arctic landscape
rare and fascinating

This unique region in the world blends the striking contrast of the midnight sun and polar night with the benevolent warmth of the Arctic forests. The modest but robust birch and beech trees mark the landscapes up to 400 metres above sea level, symbolising the extreme limit of tree development on our planet.

A region like no other !

Towering mountains, spectacular fjords and rare vegetation combine to create an idyllic setting. This perfect combination of natural elements inspired our choice to establish our base camp here, in the heart of this setting of beauty and serenity. This exceptional "Arctic green", made possible by the Gulf Stream, adds a unique touch to this polar environment.

An asset for observing
the aurora borealis

Being located on the wild coast is a great addition to Northern Lights viewing. When the weather is good, all observation posts far from the visual pollution of cities are equal or almost, but if the weather is acting up, it is better to be in a corner where the offshore wind sweeps away the clouds more easily.

A nod to the second Fram expedition, a major polar expedition

The name Båthuset refers to an episode of the 2nd Fram expedition, led by Captain Otto Sverdrup.

This mission, carried out aboard Fridtjof Nansen’s legendary polar sailing ship, made it possible to map 260,000 km² of the Canadian archipelago. During an exploration, Sverdrup and his crew, trapped by the ice, transformed their longboat into a makeshift shelter that they named “Baathuset”, or “boat-house” in Old Norwegian.

Baathuset "The boat house"

In 2014, Olivier and his crew, in partnership with the Fram Museum in Oslo, undertook a four-month expedition from Sommarøy to retrace the route of this expedition. The 9700 nautical miles covered made it possible to visit the four wintering ports of the Fram between 1898 and 1902 on Ellesmere Island, located on the edge of the Canadian polar archipelago. This pilgrimage was in response to the Fram Museum’s wish to pay tribute and bring to light this adventure that completed the enigma of the geographical limits of this immense archipelago.
